Program Note
Was Virginia Woolf's concept of ¡°a room of one's own¡± ever meant to be exclusive to women? Park reminds us that immigrants, migrant workers, and perhaps all marginalized people need a space of their own.
Two Indonesian poets living in Taiwan meet in Tainan Park at night, sharing their stories in the dim glow of the evening. They recite their poems, their words carrying dates and places, resembling entries in a personal diary. Yet their intimate exchange does not remain solely between them. Within the confines of the park, they create their own radio broadcast, one that never reaches beyond its borders. Through it, they listen to and amplify the voices of Indonesian migrant workers.
The final scene, where their words resonate throughout the park, is particularly moving. The romance of singing together and chatting warmly in a space of their own, one that seems lost in the bustling rhythm of city life, echoes through the dark summer night in the park. Their voices begin to resonate from the guardhouse that watches over the park, as if they are safeguarding even the land of Taiwan itself, once romantically called ¡°Formosa,¡± the beautiful island.
