Diaspora Features
Program Note
Agnes runs a delivery-only restaurant in the Netherlands with her friend Rini. Originally from Indonesia, she once lived there as a man named Hans. But relocating from Indonesia to the Netherlands was not solely a matter of identity. The moment she chose a life in the diaspora, it signified more than just transitioning from male to female—it involved an entirely new way of forming relationships.
Because Agnes wishes to live as her true self, she also seeks to free herself from the constraints of family and to build a life with the people she has chosen. But her estranged younger brother, Indra, whom she has not seen since childhood, arrives in the Netherlands looking for a job—and searching for Hans, who no longer exists. Agnes hesitates to reveal that she was once Hans. She has never forgotten the sensation of holding Indra as a newborn in her arms. The ties of family linger tenaciously in the body¡¯s memory.
As their broken family ties reconnect, Agnes recalls painful memories from the past. It becomes an intimate confession before the camera, and a sorrowful song in a musical sequence as well. (KIM Kyung-tae)
