Program Note
Lia, a retired history teacher, unexpectedly meets Achi while searching for her long-lost MTF transgender niece. Achi, a lazy young man living off his half-brother, knew that Lia's niece had left for Istanbul, and so, in an unexpected turn, the two strangers, who had never met before, suddenly set off for Istanbul. An elderly woman, never without a Georgian brandy called Chacha, and a hungry young man never without a cigarette unless he is eating, set out on their respective journeys—one to find her niece, the other to escape his tiresome reality. Despite the film¡¯s title, ¡°Crossing¡±, the journey from Georgia to Istanbul via car, bus, and ferry is surprisingly briefly depicted. What matters more than crossing borders is the process in which Lia and Achi fail to find her niece in Istanbul and wander, lost. Through this, the two finally reach a moment where they cross each other's boundaries. Even though conventional, it is deeply moving. The stray cats of Istanbul, appearing as extras, are a delightful bonus. (HAM Yeonsun)
