Diaspora in Focus
Program Note
Palestinian director Raed Andoni embarks on a provocative experiment. First, he brings together Palestinians who have experienced indefinite incarceration under Israeli detention. Second, he works with them to physically reconstruct a massive replica of a Palestinian detention center. Finally, after sharing memories of the violent interrogations carried out by Israeli authorities, they go on to re-enact those harrowing experiences on stage. The Palestinian detainees, who were once forced into narrow cells barely large enough for a single person to stand, and subjected to inhumane interrogation, had been pushed into utterly powerless and passive positions.
Yet this time, they willingly return to those moments of degradation—what one might call the time of insects—by their own will and choice. Out of the abyss of hell, what they wrest back with every ounce of their strength is their individuality. Even in conditions of absolute helplessness, there existed a personal time and space—something intimate and sacred—that no one could ultimately rob or destroy. In doing so, they rescue and assert their humanity in a time when they had been reduced to nothing but meat. (LEE Jong-chan)
