Diaspora in Focus
Program Note
¡°We¡¯re bad people,¡± says Reda to Chatila. His words evoke, with sadness and regret, how easily the displaced—those living in diaspora—can become ¡°bad¡± under the weight of their circumstances. Having left Palestine and now drifting through Greece in hopes of reaching Germany, Chatila and Reda find no way to survive other than through theft, robbery, and fraud. Without official documentation, there is no legal means of making a living. Ironically, in order to obtain identification and lead an honest life, they must first become ¡°bad people.¡± They commit crimes in hopes of settling in a new home, living with their families, and pursuing their dreams.
Yet by refusing them happiness or good fortune, the film portrays a kind of sorrow that may be encountered in a diasporic life. With no one to rely on, they are caught in a cycle of mutual deception, remaining ¡°bad¡± in each other. But can we truly call them evil? In witnessing their plight, are we to accept this as an inevitable outcome—or should we respond with compassion? (HAN Changwook)
