Program Note

On November 29, 1947, the United Nations adopted Resolution 181, unilaterally deciding to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab territories. The resolution was inherently unfair, favoring the Jews while disadvantaging the Palestinian Arabs. Yet, even that was not enough, as the Jews went beyond the partition lines set by the resolution, using force to expand their territory. The following year, in 1948, the State of Israel as the Jewish state was established, and since then, Israel has continued to expand its occupied territories through violent means. Looking back, Resolution 181 was a pivotal turning point in the tragic history of Palestine's division. Decades later, filmmakers Michel Khleifi and Eyal Sivan decided to name this historical dividing line ¡®Route 181¡¯ and embark on a journey along it. The film captures the diverse people they encounter on the road. A notable point is that one of the co-directors, Eyal Sivan, is Jewish. Amazingly, this is a film made by both Palestinians and Jews. In this grand road movie, we are confronted with the difficult theme of ¡®the (im)possibility of humanity¡¯ helplessly. (LEE Jong-chan)

*As a trilogy film, it includes two 10-minute intermissions during the screening.
