Program Note
Set against the backdrop of a desolate post-apocalyptic world, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga subtly reflects the experience of diaspora. Director George Miller vividly captures the pain and resistance of a displaced being through the journey of the protagonist Furiosa, who is abducted as a child and forcibly removed from her homeland.
Furiosa, who loses both her home and her mother to the patriarchal power embodied by the delusional and violent figure of Dementus, grows through her unwavering pursuit of vengeance. While adapting to the language and order of the Other, she constantly recalls her homeland. What is interesting is that her obsession with revenge and her longing to return home do not exist as separate emotions—they become entangled, emerging as a single, complex affect.
Is the ¡°Green Place,¡± Furiosa's homeland, truly a paradise that awaits at the end of revenge? The film goes beyond a simple tale of vengeance. It sheds light on the layered psyche of a diasporic existence through the pain brought on by loss, the memories of home, the experiences accumulated in a society entered through forced displacement, and the emerging identity forged in that tension. It sheds light on the layered psyche of a diasporic existence through the pain brought on by loss, the memories of home, the experiences accumulated in a society entered through forced displacement, the emergence of a new identity forged in that tension, and the unresolved, incomplete nature of liberation—even after revenge has been achieved.
