Celebrating the 9th DIAFF, Incheon Square 1 Outdoor Plaza is transformed into ¡®Welcome Square¡¯, a place to embrace all visitors to the festival. It has a festival information booth; DIAFF_SolitaryChat; a photo booth to help visitors hold their memories at the festival; and DIAspora Library where anyone can come and enjoy reading. There¡¯s more! Newly introduced DIAFF KOVEA cinema, Busking performances and Graffiti workshop will add extraordinary experiences to audiences. Decorated with green grass and ¡®moire¡¯ patterns to represent the festival¡¯s mantras of ¡®unity in diversity¡¯, Welcome Square will be a place for all visitors to harmonize in peace.
DIAFF¡¯s special ¡®DIAspora Library¡¯ is a place where anyone can freely come, enjoy and contemplate. All books introduced on DIAFF Newsletters are available here.
The 9th DIAFF shows a special workshop program to share the meaning of the festival with the audiences. Here you can paint the DIAFF poster with various color sprays, which will give you a chance to reflect on your perspective on minority groups, as well as diasporic groups around us.
LEE Jeong hwee : LEE Jeong hwee has been developing his own style as a Graffiti writer since 2007. He is currently running his own brand HWEEGRAFFITI and working on diverse graffiti works.
DIAFF has set up an open chat at the Welcome Square. This is where every visitor can freely express their thoughts. Leaving messages to the installed giant wallpaper will enable visitors to share their thoughts on diaspora.
DIAFF¡¯s new venue, KOVEA Tent Cinema is located at Square1 plaza. Sponsored by KOVEA, there will be 7 short animations screening under the theme of ¡®Diaspora and Environment¡¯ at DIAFF KOVEA Cinema. It is an opportunity for you to feel cultural diversity across your daily life and think over some climate issues currently emerging worldwide. DIAFF KOVEA Cinema is open to everyone visiting DIAFF, and it will bring audiences a new experience of enjoying both camping and film at once.
DIAFF presents hands-on experience programs, where you can recognize and erase the boarders between each other. By using and mixing up various colors on paintings and candles, you will be able to learn the meaning of harmony and coexistence.
Led by a contemporary artist, this class helps you to understand diaspora and what it means to be different. Under the theme of ¡®the colors of mind on the canvas¡¯, Participants will express various emotions in different colors and share them with others. An eco-friendly package made of traditional Korean paper will be provided for long storage of your mind painting.
KOH Jin-e: KOH Jin-e is a contemporary artist who paints ¡®places in memory¡¯ with warm colors. She is also an author of a picture book ¡ºSub-soon¡» published in 2020. Currently running her own atelier ¡®Atelier E-jin KOH¡¯, she is busy making art programs to communicate with the public.
This is where visitors can make candles using the key colors of this year¡¯s DIAFF poster. With various combinations of colors and scents, participants can make their own candles and talk about diversity and sustainability. Eco-friendly ingredients made of soy are ready for this workshop.
Candle Atelier Aran: Since 2016, KIM Eun-mi has been running her candle atelier in her hometown, Gang-hwa and actively introducing Gang-hwa to the public through her classes at schools and companies. She is reflecting her affection for her hometown by putting various aspects of Gang-wha on her candle works.
Collaborated with Yeonsu Foundation for Arts & Culture, DIAFF introduces cultural richness of Asian bread and its stories.
Bicycle Kitchen: A moving kitchen on a bicycle tells different stories of bakers in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. They are immigrants from various places in Asia and bake bread in different shapes and tastes. This is for the ones who are curious about delicious cultural stories across the table through ¡®bread¡¯.
Color the Shelter of Hope with UNHCR
The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a UN agency. It was created to protect refugees around the world and to find a solution to the refugee problem. In recognition of their contribution to protecting refugees, UNHCR was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and 1981. This year, UNHCR introduces the ¡®Shelter Campaign¡¯. Temporary shelters provide not only safety but also dignity to refugees. Participate in the craft workshop and paint your wooden frame that resembles the shelter. Pay a visit to find more information on refugees and UNHCR. If you register to become a supporter, you will receive a small gift.
UNHCR: UNHCR was founded in 1950 to protect refugees and seek a permanent solution to the refugee problem. The headquarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland. More than 17,000 people in about 130 countries including Korea are working to aid around 79,500,000 refugees and those in need of protection.
Are immigrant workers in South Korea living healthy lives? Human Rights Foundation Saram introduces its ¡®Human Rights Bus on Tour¡¯ campaign at DIAFF to talk about the right of health issue of immigrant workers in the rural area and bring changes to it. A small reward will be given to participants.
Human Rights Foundation Saram: Human Rights Foundation Saram is a non-profit private foundation supporting national human rights organizations and activists through funding. The Foundation is running Human Rights Fund to take action against urgent human rights issues and to highlight voices of social minority groups.
The Welcome Square could never be livelier without busking performances of diverse musicians, ranging from acoustic to jazz-pop bands on the weekend. DIAFF invites you all to these romantic performances and special events on green grass.
PIKER: PIKER is a band of four, seeking friendly yet original music based on pop and rock genre. The band¡¯s sounds and performances are always something to remember.
Mulove: As an abbreviation of ¡®Musical Love¡¯, Mulove is a professional musical performance team to present lovely and lively musical performances for listeners to heal.
ANAB: ANAB is a powerful and trendy female jazz & pop band that reinterprets mainstream jazz and pop songs in its own style.
