DIAFF 8th (2020)
A shepherd living in a ranch in Hwacheon, Jinwoo lives with his niece Seol. One day, Jin-woo's boyfriend Hyun-min and Seol's mother Eun-young visit him. Having been ousted by the society¡¯s prejudice towards gays, Jin-woo's quiet life starts to be disturbed by their visit. It is not uncommon to see hate and discrimination towards sexual minorities in South Korean society become more explicit. This has led many sexual minorities to seek asylum or commit suicide simply because they are not heterosexual or have a predetermined sex.
In spite of the Korean film industry that questions the necessity of representing sexual minorities, Director PARK Kun-young lays bare the despair of sexual minorities with one poetic line to another. A Distant Place is a breath of fresh air and a delight to see in a time of hatred and discrimination.
