Chasuna, who lives with her mother in the vast grasslands of Mongolia, receives an invitation to her divorced father’s birthday in a big city in southern China. However, the city landscape with its densely-packed buildings is completely foreign to the girl who is more accustomed to a life on horseback. When Chasuna discovers that her father remarried another woman, she slowly begins to face the foreign world that is so difficult for her to accept. The grassland and the city. Horses and motorcycles. Tradition and modernism. Chasuna is conflicted between two different regions of space and time. Her journey represents the experience of China’s rapid urbanization, and when the audience sees Chasuna galloping on her horse freely in the open field, the audience may sympathize with the cultural values that the director tries to protect.
