Proxy ExamProxy Exam

This film is the previous film to KIM Nakyung’s DUST-MAN, a feature debut that drew a lot of attention. Proxy Exam depicts the life of Hyun-ju, a 2nd generation North Korean defector living in South Korea, that has been classified to have no nationality. Hyun-ju’s parents died after escaping North Korea and giving birth to her in China. Lone Hyun-ju was brought to South Korea by her only relatives, her aunt and Hong-sook. However, there aren’t any items or persons that can prove her identity. Even when her friend asks whether she is from North Korea, Hyun-ju can only murmur in hesitation. Several days before her favourite idol boy-band’s fan meeting, Hyun-ju decides to take a proxy exam for Ju-hee, in return for borrowing her identification card. In Hyun-ju’s vision everything except for her has a name, as she is an outlier caused by the asylum. There are names even on the glow sticks shaken by the anonymous crowd. That is why the question that arouses during puberty, “Can I really prove who I am?” resonates loudly within. (PARK Chi-young)
