This film sharply points out the core of the cultural diversity discourse. Myung-hak visits the house of Hae-ryun in Dae-rim dong for an interview commissioned by a regional Chinese broadcaster in Yan-ji to commemorate Geum-soon¡¯s 100th birthday. Hae-ryun¡¯s family welcomes Myung-hak, but he somehow seems unsatisfied. He cannot shoot the interview as he intended because of Geum-soon¡¯s lengthy dialogues and tactless actions of her family. In the end, Myung-hak goes out to the streets of Dae-rim dong, the biggest Korean-Chinese community in Seoul, to find something to shoot. My Little Television confronts the desires to reproduce the appearance of diversity through specific identities. The diaspora¡¯s peculiarity in seeing its own reproduction makes its technical intent a farce. Myung-hak has to complete his mission as a communicator, in a world where the ease of communication rather hinders it. Latest film from LI Hongmei, director of Pollock, an Official Selection of the 5th DIAFF. (PARK Chi-young)
