Justin Chon, a Korean-American director, had first made his name known as an actor. His previous film Gook (2017) was also invited to DIAFF. As his previous film did, this film also focuses on the tough lives of Korean- Americans. Kasie who works as a karaoke hostess in Koreatown, LA lives with her bedridden father who is in a vegetative state. Even though she has a brother, Carey, he has long been away from home as he is estranged from his father. At the source of the conflict is their mother who remarried another man after leaving them while they were still young. The scars from being abandoned by their birth mother still linger in the sibling¡¯s everyday lives. When her father's exhausted caretaker unexpectedly quits, a replacement cannot be found. Kasie reluctant seeks help from Carey, and he returns home without being able to refuse. The two siblings reunite under the same roof and reminisce over old memories. Kasie and Carey drift off into daydreams as they touch their still wordless father. The father is wordless but seems to be expressing plenty. Kasie knows better than anyone of her father¡¯s loneliness and struggles to settle down in an unfamiliar place and raising the sibling by himself. She endures day by day by overlapping her own life against her father¡¯s and comforts her exhausted brother in her arms on behalf of their father. (KIM Kyung-tae)
