Rose dreams of making it big as a star in Nashville, the cradle of country music. To a Scot, rabble-rousing single-mother in Glasgow, the road to Nashville is long and winding. It takes a number of trials and tribulations to get to the city, but the mainstream wall is still too high a bar for a Scottish fledgling to reach. Her failure to realize her dream leads her back home, but the newly returned Rose has changed. Rose realizes how deeply significant her hometown is to her. But this realization comes too late to our protagonist. The film¡¯s ultimate scene portrays Rose intentionally returning to Glasgow to perform the song "There is no place like home." This scene pierces the souls of those who yearn for their home-ground after they have long departed these sacred spaces and communities. This is a prime example of diasporic ontology. Though at first blush the film may appear to be a banal British coming-of-age flick, Jessie Buckely¡¯s superb performance and music transform the film into a high-octane musical film. (LEE Hyuk-sang)
