DIAFF 2019
DIAFF 7th (2019)
Born in China in 1967, Wang Bing is one of the most important documentary directors of the modern era. This year’s special screening, Bitter Money is a documentary about a city north of Zhejiang named Huzhou and the brutal lives of clothing manufacturer laborers. Over 300,000 Chinese laborers come from the countryside to earn a living, but their lives don’t get any better while experiencing cracks in their relationships. Wang Bing ensures that he and his camera do not interfere in any way with the subjects that he films. In a 2014 interview, he said the following in regards to his work philosophy. "I am not interested in what is usually called 'storytelling,' [...] I am not making things up. [...] Through cinema, I want to immortalize this or that slice of everyday, real life." (LEE Jong-chan)
