AssassinationAssassination

In 2015, at the time of its premiere, the character of Assassination that captivated audiences was sniper AHN Okyun. Seeing the “female” freedom fighter carrying her rifle and leaping over rooftops was a rare representation in Korean cinema and was praised by critics. For this year’s special screening, we urge you to pay attention to another female character, Ahn Seongsim, played by JIN Kyung. She is an independent female character, wife of the pro-Japanese KANG Inguk, who asks her husband, “Why can't you die?” and chooses to live in Manchuria. AHN Okyun is also from Manchuria in order to carry out an assassination. Through these two female characters we are able to re-awaken the “transnational imagination.” It was a time when the 38th parallel did not exist and people could take the train through present-day North Korea and all the way to China.
