DIAFF 7th (2019)
Stories come together to make history. The problem is that for a very long time, history has been, as pronounced, a “story” of “his.” “Herstory” has never been told properly. A Resistance is about the female freedom fighters that were imprisoned for their part in history. During the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919, women who protested in the name of freedom in their individual ways, were gathered in room 8 of the Seodaemun Prison. The organizer of the Aunae Market Demonstrations, RYU Gwansun, Ryu’s senior and rally leader KWON Aera, KIM Hyanghwa, who led the Suwon gisaeng rallies, and YI Okyi, who was from North Korea and was a tea shop waitress, are among the women whose stories are told. The fact that the film explores each of these characters individually, rather than just grouping them as “women,” is the greatest virtue of A Resistance. (LEE Jong-chan)
