At Hwasan Park, located in Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City, the Onsan Migrant Manghyangbi (a monument stone for lost hometown) stands tall among the stones engraved with the names of 19 villages that have now disappeared, including Dangwol, Ubong, Daean, and Mokdo (Around 13,000 villagers left Onsan due to the industrial complex development in the 1970s). The film brings back memories of that time through the appearance of the Onsan National Industrial Complex, which can no longer be found, from the Manghyangbi¡¯s viewpoint. People could leave because there was a place to return, but even though they came back, they cannot recall it. The film capturing present images of Onsan, including noise from factories, white smoke coming out from chimneys, and covered with cold asphalt, reminds us of the era of ¡®homelessness¡¯ defined by German philosopher Heidegger. The narration of the film is like a promise not to forget their hometown and a cry over the people who made the locals leave their hometown. (KI Hyungmin)
