In September 2020, Moria, the largest refugee camp in Europe, burned down on the Greek Island of Lesbos, as several refugees were discontent against the lockdown restrictions caused by Covid-19 and set fire to the camp. Around 12,000 refugees have lost their shelter in the fire and had to leave again. The film follows two friends, Ayham and Khalil, who scavenge for metal to survive in the ashes and rubble. They barely make their living by removing burnt metal structures or selling wires from wiring boxes. Greece, which borders Turkey, is an intermediate stop for refugees from the Middle East to get into Europe, and the islands of the Aegean Sea are suffering from overwhelming numbers of refugees. The Greek government is not completely neglecting the refugee issue, but there is too much to overcome the long-standing national bankruptcy crisis. The lost hometown and the burned-out camp, refugees who have lost their dreams and hopes, and the dismantled scrap metal stand in a strange contrast, symbolize the reality. (KI Hyungmin)
